The Omodaka Kamon, representing the Sagittaria trifolia plant, is a crest (or family emblem) used by several samurai families in Japan. However, it is important to note that Kamon are not exclusive to a single family and can be adopted or modified by different lineages over time. Here are some examples of samurai families known to have used the Omodaka Kamon:
Matsudaira Family (松平氏): Some branches of the Matsudaira family, especially those that established ties with the Tokugawa family, used the Omodaka Kamon. The Matsudaira family is particularly famous as it gave birth to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Honda Family (本多氏): The Honda family, a family of daimyos (feudal lords) from the Sengoku and Edo periods, is also known for having used the Omodaka Kamon. The Hondas were significant vassals and allies of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Sakai Family (酒井氏): Some branches of the Sakai family, another family of daimyos, also adopted the Omodaka Kamon. The Sakai were long-time servants of the Tokugawa.
Ii Family (井伊氏): Although the Ii family is more often associated with other Kamon, some branches may have used the Omodaka Kamon. The Ii family is famous for figures such as Ii Naomasa, one of the four heavenly kings of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
These families, among others, played significant roles in the history of the samurai and feudal Japan. The choice of a Kamon like Omodaka by these families illustrates the importance of the symbolism of victory and prosperity in samurai culture
At KyotoKimonoShop.com, we celebrate and preserve these traditions, offering kimonos that bear these historic emblems, allowing our customers to connect with the elegance and richness of Japan's samurai past.
