Symbolism of the Kamon – Maru ni Tsuta (丸に蔦)
The Tsuta (蔦) represents the three-pointed ivy vine (Parthenocissus tricuspidata), a climbing plant known for its ability to firmly attach itself and grow steadily upward.
In Japanese symbolism, the ivy embodies:
- Resilience – steady growth despite obstacles
- Loyalty and attachment – strong connection to its foundation
- Prosperity and expansion – continuous development over time
The enclosing circle (maru) signifies harmony, protection, and continuity, making this crest a powerful emblem of balanced strength.
Historically, the Tsuta mon became widespread during the Edo period and was used by various samurai families, including branches associated with the Matsudaira / Tokugawa lineage. Nearly 290 variations of this crest exist, highlighting its enduring prestige.
